How Long Does It Take To Make Money Writing?

People who want to make money from their writing skills, blogging skills or just want to make money online, are always asking how long it is going to take. It's certainly a good question to ask. The problem is that people have false expectations of how much money they can make and how quickly they can make it.

There are adverts plastered all over the internet about how you can make $4,567 in an hour whilst sitting on the beach with your laptop. Perhaps some lucky person really has found a way of doing this. However one thing is for sure, if you are starting out with nothing, you will never be able to do this.

If people really can make this kind of money, why would they tell anyone about it? Why wouldn't they just sit there cashing in and not bother creating any competition for themselves. This tells you that it's likely to be a scam.

So if you think you can make anywhere near this kind of money with little effort you might as well give up now because it just doesn't happen like that. There are people who have been trying to make money on the internet for years and still haven't managed to make enough to give up their day job.

What you will need to do is decide what the best course of action is for you. Do you want to Make Money Writing For Others or do you want to Make Money Writing For Yourself? This will have a major impact on how quickly it will take to make money.

If you want to write for others then it doesn't have to take long before you start to make money. Start off by creating a portfolio of about a dozen articles that reflect your writing style. You might decide to focus on a few niches that you are familiar with or you might decide to write about lots of different things.

When you have created a portfolio you can then show it to potential clients. Most people who want to make money writing will do so by writing "how to" articles on child care, health, finances etc. The price you will charge will normally be at least $5 for 500.

Writing 500 words can be done within half an hour so if you write two articles an hour you are making $10/hr. This may or may not be a very good income for you.

If you are a particularly good writer and have good qualifications then you can charge a lot more per article however finding the sort of clients who will pay for this isn't easy. There are people who can charge $25 per 500 words.

If you are new to writing for others then you don't want to price yourself too high because you want to build up a reputation. Nor do you want to sell yourself too cheap.

The best place to begin is probably somewhere like odesk.com, elance.com and rentacoder.com. They have lots of clients who are looking for writers so it's easy to find work there. It can take a while to build up feedback so in the beginning you might want to do work cheaply just for the purposes of building up your reputation.

Once you have a lot of people saying good things about you, it will be much easier to start charging more money. You might even want to tell potential clients that you are looking to build up your feedback rating and therefore are prepared to do the work cheaply.

So if you are looking to bring in some money quickly then writing for others is certainly the best way to go. However there is a lot of cheap competition so you might find it difficult to make the kind of money you want.

Make Money Writing - Beware Of The Scams

A flood of people are turning to the internet in order to make some extra money. They are filled with hopes and dreams about all the money they will be raking in but often these dreams fizzle out into nothing. It's heartbreaking to hear of stories of people who hand over their hard-earned cash only to discover they have been scammed.

Some people are scammed and don't even know that it's happened. How can this be true? Well, there are people out there who are telling everyone they are an expert. They say that they know how to make money and will show you too. The problem is that they might be known as a "one trick pony." So the money they made from one venture might just be luck or a case of being in the right place at the right time. However anyone else trying to emulate their success is unlikely to have the same success.

It's difficult to say whether or not that they are purposely scamming anyone. It's just that what they are teaching might not be easily implemented by others. Normally these people talk about the importance of writing about topics you are passionate; becoming socially active online; using twitter; using Digg and StumbleUpon; interacting with your visitors etc. They talk about how you should be writing purely for your visitors and that your writing should be so compelling that your visitors come back and subscribe to your RSS feed.

This sort of approach isn't necessarily bad, it's just not always the best approach. You should really be aiming to write articles about topics you know about but you don't have to be passionate about it. You can write about things that you have experienced. Like, maybe your car got covered in bird crap. You could write about what you did to clean it off. Do you have to be passionate about bird crap? No way!

Ironically people who subscribe to the idea that you have to write about something they are passionate end up writing about making money writing online. This is pretty ironic really. They don't have any experience in making money writing yet they are telling people how to make money writing. It just doesn't make sense yet that's exactly what is happening. They think there is nothing wrong with that but in reality they must be mad.

These said people are also releasing eBooks about how to make money writing. They pretend that they are an expert but they really don't have a clue. Yet they are charging $47, $97 and even $147 for these products. Some of these people are even selling monthly memberships to be coached on how to make money writing.

It's like a virus. There are more and more of them and trying to figure out who actually knows what they're talking about is very difficult. You end up having to do so the hard way by trying out the methods they teach. Either they will work for you or they won't. Unfortunately most people give up within a couple of months.
